It is not common in the United States to have a personal briefing on the state of Iran’s government from someone who was present at the creation of the Islamic Republic, who is a trained cleric, who knows all the key players, and who has spent jail time because of his criticism of the way Iran is governed.
Mohsen Kadivar is a very well known Iranian cleric who is presently in the United States in exile, because he cannot live or work in Iran. Film maker (and Harvard Divinity School student) Mitch Hanley has made a short documentary about Kadivar and his views. It is illuminating.
It may surprise you to learn how many of the clerics in Iran oppose the theocratic form of government and what it has become — effectively a religious monarchy in place of the shah’s monarchy that was overthrown.
